OLYMPICS AND QINGDAO

Qingdao people have a strong liking for sports. As an athletic and soccer town, it has two A League teams - Qingdao Beer and Hailifeng. As the host for the 29th Olympic Yachting events, Qingdao has begun making overall plans in order to improve the ecological environment, highlight "Green Olympics" and "Humanistic Olympics", and build the city into a green Olympic metropolis for sustainable development. By the end of 2003, plans will be finalized for such service facilities as an international tourism marina and a yachting club; by the end of 2006, construction of the Olympic stadiums and fields will be completed.

Brief Introduction to the 2008 Olympics Qingdao Projects

Qingdao will host the 2008 Olympic sailing activities, and the city plans to develop 154 Olympic projects to support these races. Many of these projects will be turned into major tourism facilities to capitalize on the long and beautiful coast of Qingdao. The current Beihei Shipyard will be moved in order to accommodate the new facilities.

Qingdao boasts great advantages and potential in the port business, marine industry, and tourism and financial services. Among the top five ports in China, Qingdao is the largest container port in China and the third seaport. Years of development have produced well known brands such as Haier (appliances) and Tsingtao Beer. Yet its waterfront is underdeveloped for water sports and Western-style tourism.

The 2008 Olympics projects, anticipated to have a total value of US. $ 9.1 billion, are divided into three priorities: Olympic necessary (23), Olympic auxiliary (15), and Olympic relevant. These include the following:

International Yacht/Sailing Club
The Aquatic Sports Centre
Olympic Plaza
Olympic Village
International Tourist Resort Hotel
International Luxury Cruise Terminal
International Conference Centre

Seaside Walkway
Huiquan Beach Service Facilities
Institutuional Use Facilities
Various Commercial & Tourism Facilities (stores, restaurants, bars, etc.)
Marine World & Aquatic Museum.
